20년 동안 홀로 알몸으로 산 사나이 Surrounded by dangerous currents and without a drop of fresh water, even local fishermen rarely land on Sotobanari island in the remote west of Japan's Okinawa prefecture. 위험한 해류에 둘러싸여 있고 마실 물이 한 방울도 없어 지역 어민조차도 거의 찾지 않는 일본 오키나와 현 서부 해역의 외딴 소토바나리섬. But all alone for two decades, 76-year-old Masafumi Nagasaki has made this desert island an unlikely retirement home -- with an unusual dress code. 하지만 마사푸미 나가사키(76) 씨는 혼자서 20년간 이 무인도를 특이한 복장 규정이 있는 색다른 실버타운으로 만들었다.   Braving typhoons and biting insects, Nagasaki is a hermit in the buff. 태풍과 흡혈 곤충의 공격을 무릅쓰고 이 섬에서 살아가는 나가사 키 씨는 알몸의 은둔자이다. "It must have been about the second year I came here, and there was this typhoon that smacked into the island head-on. For about a year there was none of this shade, I just scorched under the sun. It was at that point I thought this was going to be an impossible place to live," Nagasaki told Reuters in an encounter on Sotobanari island, which translated from the local dialect appropriately means "outer distant" island. “제가 이곳에 오고 2년째 되던 해 태풍이 섬에 불어 닥쳤어요. 그리고 한 1년 동안 이런 그늘이 없었어요. 태양 아래 피부가 그을렸죠. 그때 이 섬에서 살 수 없겠다고 생각했어요.” 나카사키 씨는 소토바나리섬에서 로이터 기자와 만나서 이같이 말했다. 소토바나리섬은 ‘외부와 동떨어진’ 섬이라는 뜻의 이 지역 방언을 옮긴 것이다. After a brief career as a photographer, and a longer one in the murkier side of the entertainment industry, Nagasaki says he wanted a place to retire away from it all. 과거 사진작가로 잠깐 일을 하긴 했지만 대부분 연예계의 ‘음지’에서 활동한 나가사키 씨는 그 모든 것들에서 멀리 떨어져서 살 곳을 원했다고 말했다. For the first year, he still rushed to throw on clothes when boats passed his way. But slowly the island stripped away his embarrassment. 첫해에 그는 배들이 섬 근처를 지날 때마다 옷을 입기 바빴다. 하지만 천천히 이 섬은 그러한 어색함을 없애줬다. "I don't do what society tells me but I do follow the rules of the natural world. You can't beat nature so you just have to obey it completely. That's what I learned when I came here, and that's probably why I get by so well," Nagasaki said. “저는 사회가 하라는 대로 따르지 않습니다. 하지만 자연계의 법칙은 따릅니다. 자연을 이길 수 없기 때문에 그저 완전히 따라야만합니다. 그것이 제가 이곳에 왔을 때 배운 겁니다. 그리고 아마도 제가 이곳에서 잘 살아가고 있는 이유일 겁니다”라고 나가사키 씨가 말했다. "Walking around naked doesn't really fit in with normal society, but here on the island it feels right, it's like a uniform. If you put on clothes you'll feel completely out of place," he added. “평범한 사회에서는 벌거벗고 걸어 다닐 수 없죠. 하지만 이 섬에서는 괜찮아요. 유니폼과도 같은 거죠. 오히려 옷을 입으면 전혀 어울리지 않는 기분이 들어요”라고 그가 덧붙였다.   But he does puts on clothes once a week for a trip to the nearest settlement, about one hour by skiff, to collect 10,000 yen (120 U.S. dollars) his brother sends him each month. 하지만 그는 일주일에 한 번 소형 보트를 타고 섬에서 약 1시간 걸리는 거리에 있는 마을에 간다. 자신의 남자 형제가 매달 보내주는 1만 엔(한화 약 14만 원)을 찾아 쓰기 위해서다. With that he buys fresh water and food, including his favorite sweet-and-sticky rice balls. 그는 그 돈으로 자신이 가장 좋아하는 달고 차진 주먹밥을 포함해 생수와 먹을 것을 구입한다. And what may seem like a carefree lifestyle, Nagasaki also sets himself a strict timetable. 속 편한 생활로 보이지만 나가사키 씨는 스스로 철저한 시간표를 짠다. He begins the day with stretches in the sun on the beach. From there the day then becomes a race against time, as he prepares food, cleans camp and washes in buckets of rainwater before the light falls and insects come out to bite. 그는 해변의 태양 아래서 스트레칭을 하며 하루를 시작한다. 그 때부터 하루는 시간과의 싸움이다. 어두워지고 벌레들이 나와서 물어뜯기 전까지 음식을 준비하고 텐트를 청소하고 빗물 받아놓은 걸로 씻는다. It is not the healthiest of lifestyles, he admits -- but then that's not the point. 그는 이 생활이 아주 건강한 방식은 아니라고 인정한다. 하지만 그건 중요한 게 아니다. "Finding a place to die is a really important thing to do, and I've decided here is the place for me," Nagasaki said. “마지막에 눈감을 곳을 찾는 건 정말로 중요한 일이에요. 저는 이 섬을 그 장소로 정했어요”라고 나가사키 씨가 말했다. "It hadn't really occurred to me before how important it is to choose the place of your death, like whether it's in a hospital or at home with family by your side.
